Washington Road Safety: How Does 2012 Stack Up?

As the year 2012 draws to a close, motor vehicle agencies throughout Washington are gathering accident statistics and comparing them to previous years. Although most numbers are still preliminary, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) reports that 2012 saw a reduced number of many types of accidents involving motor vehicles – but an increased rate of motorcycle crashes.

According to the WTSC’s statistics for the past four years, as of the end of November 2012, Washington had 240 fatal motor vehicle accidents. This number is lower than 2011’s twelve-month total of 301 fatal accidents and represents a continued downward trend since 2008, when accidents claimed 364 lives in Washington.

Similar downward trends can be seen in the numbers for pedestrian deaths and bicyclist deaths. For 2012, the state currently has 60 fatal pedestrian accidents and 10 fatal bicycle accidents on record. The pedestrian number is lower than the 2011 total, which stood at 65, and equals the 2011 bicycle accident total, in which 10 bicyclists also lost their lives.

To date, only motorcycle accidents have increased in 2012 over the previous year, in an upward trend that worries some analysts. As of the end of November, 83 motorcyclists had lost their lives in Washington traffic crashes, compared to 72 bikers in all of 2011 and 70 in 2010.
