Maryland Moves Up the Ranks in National Health Study

The Maryland personal injury lawyers at Alpert Schreyer were pleased to see that an annual study conducted by the United Health Foundation has seen Maryland improve overall as a state in its health. The study, America’s Health Rankings, rated Maryland as the 19th healthiest state in the United States, a major jump from its position as 24th in the year 2011.

Some of the most positive aspects of Maryland residents’ health found by the study included a low amount of smoking, less children in poverty, and a ready availability of primary care physicians. Difficulties experienced include a high violent crime rate, high levels of air pollution, commonly low birth weight for newborns, and a high infant mortality rate.

The study found that more than 1.2 million Maryland adults are obese and 1.2 million live what is classified as a sedentary lifestyle. Over the course of the last 10 years, the percentage of children living in poverty, rate of preventable hospitalizations, and rate of cardiovascular deaths have all decreased significantly. Overall, Maryland has been seen as making major improvements in the health of its citizens in the large majority of relevant areas.

The healthiest state in the country was Vermont for the fourth year in a row, while Mississippi and Louisiana were tied for 49th place, both of which have ranked in the bottom three since 1990.

At Alpert Schreyer, we understand that even the healthiest and safest resident can suffer serious losses in the event of an accident caused by another person’s negligence or recklessness. Often, these injuries can leave a victim and his or her family devastated and reeling from physical, financial, and emotional losses. But there is hope through holding those at fault responsible and finding compensation. To learn more about how we can help you in your search for justice, call (800) 489-1577.
