Keep Teens Safe Around Trucks: Share These Big Rig Accident Prevention Tips

Large trucks don’t make up a large percentage of traffic on Missouri roads, but they do account for a large percentage of deaths and serious injuries in multi-vehicle accidents. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), nearly 25 percent of all car accident deaths occur in accidents between a passenger car and a motor vehicle. Across all truck accidents, 70 percent of deaths occurred when a large truck collided with a smaller car.

Teens are at a particular risk of truck accident injuries and deaths, according to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Association (CVSA). The CVSA estimates that 9.4 million teens and young adults ages 16-24 drive on U.S. roads every day, which is only about 4.7 percent of all licensed drivers in the United States. However, teens suffer accident injuries and deaths at two or three times that rate - the 16-24 age group makes up 10.3 percent of all deaths and 13.5 percent of all accidents on U.S. roads., and many of these accidents involve large trucks.

Teens are vulnerable to Missouri big rig accidents for several reasons. First, an inexperienced teen or young adult driver may be intimidated by the size and force of large trucks, and may swerve or make another driving maneuver that could lead to an accident. Second, teens lack the experience behind the wheel that helps older drivers anticipate potential accidents and avoid them. Both of these situations can cause a younger driver to crash when an older one would not.
