Sharp Increase in U.S. Traffic Deaths Leaves Analysts Confused

Newly-released information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shown that the first half of 2012 saw the total amount of traffic accident-related deaths rise nine percent from 2011. In total, 16,290 people were killed in car accidents from January through June 2012, baffling analysts as to why fatalities increased so much, according to a Reuters report.

The total amount of crash deaths is the most since 2009. The total deaths are 1,340 more than the same time frame in 2011. Experts are speculating that the increase could be the result of factors ranging from the economy and weather to gas prices and texting while driving. The NHTSA and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) are continuing to pursue strict laws against texting and most types of cell phone use while driving in all 50 states, although many still do not have laws against such types of behavior, despite their link to distracted driving crashes.

The year 2011 saw traffic deaths hit a 60-year low that followed a year-after-year downward trend. Executive director of the GHSA Barbara Harsha stated that “We may just be going back to the way it was before.” She also stressed that the increase does not indicate a trend, and that maintaining a constant decrease in accidents is incredibly difficult.
