Preventing Wintertime Slip-and-Fall Accidents

This winter has already proven to be one of the coldest in recent memory. Between the Nor'easter, blizzards, snowfall, harsh winds, frostbite, and road hazards, there are many winter weather threats that all New Jersey residents have to deal with.

If you are a homeowner or business owner, there are steps you can take to make your premises safer during these cold winter months. You can keep your property safe by:

  • Staying abreast of the changing weather conditions. Be prepared.
  • Have an adequate supply of snow and ice removal tools in an accessible area.
  • Regularly shovel and apply ice melt to all walking areas. Shoveling early and often will make the job easier.
  • Monitor areas where ice accumulates. There are certain areas that are particularly dangerous for pedestrians.
  • Clearly label and identify ramps and stairs that may not be visible in snowy conditions.
  • Work with a snow removal company you trust. Keeping your driveway or parking lot free of ice is a great way to prevent slip-and-fall accidents from occurring.
  • Place beveled edge mats in walking areas that are wet. You should also replace wet mats with dry ones.
  • Apply a slip-resistant floor treatment in areas that are particularly prone to getting wet.
  • Install adequate lights outside so that pedestrians will be able to see ice.
  • Put up warning signs around areas that are wet.

You can reduce your chances of falling by making sure that you never leave the house without proper shoes and attire. If you have to wear dress shoes or high heels, carry them with you and put them on later. You need a boot or shoe that has a deep tread capable of gripping the ice. You should also take smaller steps, avoid areas that may be icy, and use railings whenever they are available.
