Help Kids Stay Safe When Out On Their Own

Part of growing up is learning to handle increasing independence, but it also means facing new risks.  It’s tempting for parents to avoid letting kids go out on their own for as long as possible, but doing so can also deprive children of valuable opportunities to learn and grow, and no parent can stay with a child every moment of every day.

When your kids are out on their own, however, you can prepare them to face dangers by walking them through several safety tips and procedures.  Here are a few things kids should know before they face the wide world on their own.
  • Make sure your child knows his or her full name, home address, and phone number.  Your child should also know your full name and the full name of at least one other adult who can help, such as your child’s other parent, an aunt or uncle, or a trusted neighbor.
  • Teach children how to dial 911 or a local emergency number if an emergency occurs. Ensure they also know the number of another trusted adult they can call if they need help or have a question.
  • Remind children to take a friend or stay in a group when they go places, such as the bus stop.
  • Caution children not to accept a ride from anyone, even someone they know, unless you have told them directly that it is okay.
