Pedestrian Accidents: What to Teach Your Children

No family should have to go through the grief of losing a child, especially not in a sudden, sometimes preventable accident involving a vehicle. Unfortunately, far too often when children attempt to cross a road, they can be hit and killed by negligent drivers.  While this is every parent’s worst fear, there are some ways to take action against this kind of tragic loss. Not every accident is preventable, but here are a few ways to make your kids a little safer:

  • Talk to your children about how to cross the road safely. If they are too young to cross alone, remind them that they may never cross a road without holding an adult’s hand. If they are old enough and attentive enough to understand and obey traffic signals, they can cross without an adult. Teach them how to interpret the signals, and go with them several times to ensure they know how to cross safely.
  • Teach children to look and listen for cars. Sometimes a person can hear a car before it comes into sight.
  • Teach them to look both ways several times before crossing, and then to cross quickly.
  • Dress your children in brightly colored clothing if they will be walking to school. Purchase brightly colored backpacks to help make them more visible. If they will be walking at night, make sure that you purchase reflective gear for them to wear.
  • Have your children walk with friends to school. Groups are more visible to drivers, and other children may help each other cross the road safely.
