Maryland State Fire Marshall Warns Maryland Residents about Suspicious Packages

Sadly, in the world we live in, it is possible that we could receive a suspicious package or run across a suspicious device.  Courtesy of thebaynet.com and published on March 10, 2013, the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshall advises the public to stay safe when suspicious packages or potentially dangerous devices are encountered.

Suspicious packages may have chemicals, biological hazards, or explosives inside.  The following safety tips are offered by the Maryland State Fire Marshall and the Maryland catastrophic injury lawyers at the firm of Alpert Schreyer:
  • Be suspicious of packages or envelopes that are from someone you do not know or that are unexpected.
  • Be wary if the labeling is unusual, if ordinary words are not spelled correctly, if you find threatening words or excessive labels reading “confidential,” or “do not X-ray.”
  • Be suspicious of packages that are shaped oddly.
  • Be cautious if the package has been excessively taped or has no return mailing address.
  • Never move or even touch a package that has protruding wires, an unusual odor, unusual staining, or the presence of aluminum foil.
Improvised explosive devices are designed to destroy whatever is nearby.  They can be lethal and may explode without warning due to faulty electronics or sensitivity to temperature. Whether the device is large or small, if you are suspicious of a package, dial 911 to receive assistance from trained professionals.
