Tips to Stay Safe on New York Roads this Thanksgiving

Every year at Thanksgiving, Americans take to the roadway to celebrate with friends and family. According to the annual Thanksgiving travel forecast released by AAA, 43.6 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles over the holiday. This is a slight increase from the number of Thanksgiving travelers in 2011.

If you are driving in New York this Thanksgiving, it would be in your best interest to have a navigator guide you. There are a number of areas that are still affected by Sandy and you may encounter traffic congestion. Fill up your car with gas before you leave and make sure that you have adequate tire pressure and fluid levels.

Every holiday, there is an increase in drunk driving accidents, so be on the lookout for dangerous drivers. If you see a driver behaving erratically, keep your distance and notify the authorities. Make sure that you do not drive while intoxicated, it only takes a couple of drinks for alcohol to affect your ability to drive.

As temperatures continue to drop, there is the chance that driving this Thanksgiving in New York may be more treacherous than in past years. Keep plenty of distance between your vehicle and the cars in front of you. Make sure your brakes are in working order and always use your turn signals. Slow down if the conditions get worse.
