Fall and Choking Hazards Prompt Kolcraft Stroller Recall

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced the recall of approximately 5,600 Kolcraft Contours Options LT tandem strollers due to fall and choking hazards presented by defective front wheels and the nuts which hold the stroller basket support screws in place.

The Defects

The front wheel assembly of the affected stroller may break which can cause the stroller to tip forward, creating a fall hazard for any child in the stroller. Fall injuries can include bumps and bruises but may also be more serious, such as brain injuries.

For strollers produced in January and February 2012, another defect  is the nuts holding the stroller basket support screws in place which may detach, posing a choking hazard.

Reported Injuries

Kolcraft Enterprises, Inc., based in Chicago, Illinois, has received six incident reports of the front wheels breaking and two incident reports of the stroller basket nuts becoming detached. Fortunately, no injuries have yet been reported.

Product Details

The recalled strollers include all model number ZT012 Contours Options LT tandem strollers. The manufacturing date and model number may be found printed on a label on the back leg of the stroller. The affected two-seat strollers include one mesh basket under both seats and were sold in one of two color themes: gray with yellow accents and canopies and black with red accents and canopies.

The strollers were sold between February 2012 and July 2012 at youth specialty stores and Burlington Coat Factory locations throughout the country, as well as online at Target.com, Amazon.com, and other retailers. They were sold for around $250.

The Remedy

Consumers should stop using the strollers and contact Kolcraft for replacement wheels at no-cost. If the affected stroller was produced in January and February 2012, Kolcraft will also send replacement nuts.
